about
Nous – two liners
From 2020 – The start of this piece came from a news article from RAD point CA, a Radio-Canada show on contemporary issues. The article was talking about how the biggest obstacle to tackling Climate Change was not technological but rather social and political. ‘Le défi, c’est nous – si nous pourrions travailler ensemble, les solutions existent.’
That started me thinking about the false binaries that surround us, and from there, the lyrics just came out.
I wrote this on my Seagull 6 steel string acoustic – the electric instruments came later. There are some musical influences from the Québec music scene in there – a bit of Les Cowboys Fringants, Mitsou, Beau Dommage, and Corcoran, with a touch of Steely Dan thrown in.
Ultimately, I want the overall message to be one of hope – I really do believe that if we can work together toward the common goal of saving the planet and halting Climate Change, we can do it! Convincing people to pull together in the same direction is the hardest part!
lyrics
Nous
Y’a pas de moi, y’a pas de toi
Y’a pas de gauche, y’a pas de droite
Y’a pas de chasse, y’a pas de proie
C’est seulement nous.
Y’a pas de paix, y’a pas de guerre
Y’a pas de ciel, y’a pas d’enfer
Y’a pas de père, y’a pas de mère
C’est seulement
Nous
Qui pouvons faire n’importe quoi !
Protégerons la terre, la mer
Nous n’avons pas d’autre choix !
Vivons en paix, cessons de détruire,
de salir, d’user comme des vampires !
Qui nous sauvera de nous-mêmes ?
C’est seulement nous !
C’est seulement nous !
Y’a pas de païen, y’a pas de pieux
Y’a pas de jeunes, y’a pas de vieux
Y’a pas des autres, y’a pas de « eux »
C’est seulement nous !
Y’a pas de fou, y’a pas de sage
Pas de faiblesse, pas de courage
Pas d’sauvage, y’a pas de cage
C’est seulement
Nous
Qui pouvons faire n’importe quoi
Protégerons la terre, la mer
Nous n’avons pas d’autre choix !
Vivons en paix, cessons de détruire,
d’salir, d’user comme des vampires
Qui nous sauvera de nous-mêmes ?
C’est seulement nous !
Nous (English translation - Us)
There’s no me, there’s no you
There’s no left, there's no right
There’s no predator, there’s no prey
There’s only us.
There’s no peace, there’s no war
There's no Heaven, there's no Hell
There’s no father, there's no mother
There’s only
Us
Who can do anything!
Let’s protect the Earth, the Sea
We don’t have any other choice.
Let’s live in peace, stop destroying
Dirtying, using up as if we’re vampires!
Who will save us from ourselves?
There’s only us!
There’s only us!
There’s no pagan, there’s no pious,
There’s no youth, there’s no old age,
There are no others, there’s no ‘them’
There’s only us.
There’s no fool, there’s no wise man
There’s no weakness, there’s no courage
There’s no wildness, there’s no cage
There’s only
Us
Who can do anything
Let’s protect the Earth, the Sea
We don’t have any other choice
Let’s live in peace, stop destroying
Dirtying, using up as if we’re vampires.
Who will save us from ourselves?
There’s only us.
